Artisan Yerba Mate Gourd and Bombilla Straw
There is an art to making a beautiful and functional yerba mate gourd. There are many on the market, but ours are made by a wonderful artisan family in Argentina. They baby the little plants along and make sure they are planted in the perfect soil to ensure a sturdy and thick wall. Then they transplant and carefully watch the gourds so they are not competing for nutrients. Then the gourds are picked and dried. And, then this family takes the extra time to cure the gourds for us. Many gourds that are sold today are not cured leaving that to the customer to try to figure out, which can be disasterous when mold appears.
The finishing steps include placing a silver rim around the gourd- the rim is pressed and sealed (very important step) to prevent leaking. The gourd is tiger flamed and polished and shipped off to us. The bombillas are selected for each one so eliminate toppling issues. Each gourd will vary slightly in appearance and size.
